atmosphere.. as it applies to reading

after work today I subwayed to 86th street..
had time to kill so walked around a bit..
ate a bulbous tuna bagel while watching a big flat screen tv on wall - show called 'can I be like you' - about a nerdy kid getting tips from a 'cool' kid on how to pull it off.. the cool kid was teaching him how to surf - and encouraged him to ask 2 girls sitting on the beach to go to a party that night at the cool kid's place.. the girls show and the cool kid offers pointers.. then the cool kid takes him shopping - to buy cool clothes - he bringshim to American Eagle - and they wear the exact same outfit out of the store..
was killing time because I was planning on meeting a batch of friends in central park to see a free concert - the new york philharmonic - I've been before - fantastic - and I'm still early, even after the bagel. . . decide to stop in a deli to buy a bottled water - it's called the 'Parisian Deli' and this guy inside is chatting up the laughing Asian cashier girl who speaks perfect English.. and he gets into talking about the philharmonic concert last night and how a thunderstorm blew in after the fireworks.. 'philharmonic is tonight, right?' I said. 'this was last night' he said - something to that effect..
i walked out with furrowed brow - booped around on computer phone - to find the concert was yesturday.. the e-mail said they (friends) would have bright orange balloons - to see them in plain view..
so I started walking for 1,9 trains.. i turned a corner and espyed big bundles of books, by the curb, tied up with string - pieces of paper with 'garbage' markered on them..
so i glance through.. a bum turns up next to me, doing the same.. eye catches one by Saul Bellow.. 'December's Dean'.. So I pick it up.. and walk off, reading its yellowed pages.. and it paints this picture of the main character holed up in an apartment in Bucharest..
and right there interest began to dwindle, ebb away..
books bring you into an atmosphere - and these days as I read I seek that out right off the bat - and if it's some place I deem as kinda lamos (i.e. some place I wouldn't really wanna be) that tends to be it for that book - curtains - onto the next book.. books sling their messages into you - do you want it to do what it's setting out to do - do you desire to be where it's trying to bring you? tv shows too - take sopranos - who wants to be hanging around mobsters in NJ? someone pass the remote..
I like reading books that carry you to places you really dig..
and we're due for a better word than 'dig' these days..
all the same, you get the point. . .

how about reading 7 Cities this summer - 7 European cities and NYC crammed between its covers - and the philosophical lines in there to boot... level to level - and onwards we go - writing new book: 'it is what it is' - do you like that title. . .
